We've all heard the claims that soya can reduce cholesterol, but could it also save the planet? According to New Scientist, a group of US biochemists believes a fuel for planes based on soya oil could help reduce the world's consumption of fossil fuels.

Traditional commercial jet fuels release carbon monoxide into the atmosphere when they are burned, but Bernard Tao of Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, plans to tell a meeting of the American Chemical Society in California how a fuel which mixes soya oil with traditional jet fuel can be developed. He believes the use of the fuel would help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
