KATHY Butler became the first Scottish athlete to be certain of a place in Great Britain's team for Athens when she won the Olympic trial 10,000 metres at Watford on Saturday.

Edinburgh-born Butler, 28, was off the pace at one stage, but came through to win well in 31min 36.90 seconds. Hayley Yelling, forced to thread her way through lapped runners, missed the qualifying time by 0.14 of a second when runner-up with 31:45.14. Butler herself had fallen less than a second short of the qualifying mark last month.
