TWO million doses of a bird flu vaccine are to be stockpiled by the government in an effort to safeguard health workers against a deadly strain of the virus that has swept across Asia.

Patricia Hewitt, the health secretary, said the H5N1 vaccines would be used as a "first line of defence" to protect key medical and emergency workers against a possible global pandemic of the virus.
