Adrian Struthers is one of a new breed of British beekeepers. "I don't do it for the money. I don't do it for the honey." Instead, he finds it the perfect antidote to the stress and pace of modern urban life.

It's hard to imagine anyone less like the caricature of a grey- haired grandad pottering among his hives in some country garden than this 34-year-old medical photographer who works at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and lives on a modern housing estate in Lanarkshire. But when he lifts the lid on one of his three hives, he enters a different world.

"You have to slow right down and concentrate hard. You can't look through a hive quickly."

His three-year old daughter Mirran loves to accompany him as he checks his bees and likes to operate the extractor that uses centrifugal force to suck the honey from the combs. "She's quite involved in it and it gives her an insight into a rural way of life."
