Cabinet Conscience

Summary

HARRY Reid is "surprised" by Gordon Brown whom he believes "is, or should be, the conscience of the cabinet" (July 26). The conscience of the cabinet was Robin Cook, who resigned as foreign secretary over the invasion of Iraq.

Gordon Brown remained in power and played a key role in the invasion of Iraq. If Tony Blair is a "war criminal" then Gordon Brown is one also. It is not possible to have a conscience of the kind suggested by Harry Reid and to be, at the same time, a "war criminal". Robin Cook's resignation, and his resignation speech in the House of Commons, stand in stark contrast to his former cabinet colleagues.
