SHARES in Cairn Energy bubbled 2% higher yesterday after the Edinburgh-based oil firm was given the go-ahead to search for black gold in Nepal, one of the world's poorest countries.

The company, headed by chief executive Bill Gammell, is planning to explore five locations in mountainous terrain bordering India. Cairn's successful exploration work in India has sent its shares rocketing in value this year after three big finds in Rajasthan.
