Summary
IN 1983 CalMac was investigated by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Surely, more than 20 years later, it is time for another public inquiry. Not least because of the growing public concern about the management of the company. Evidence is mounting. Allegations of abuse of monopoly position by ensuring that UK bidders for ships are excluded. Allegations of predatory pricing of CalMac piers keeping competition out. Farcical ticketing regimes causing wholesale customer disgust. Building ships like the MV Coruisk which break down with alarming frequency, and have bits like propellers and propulsion units drop off.
For heaven's sake, CalMac is far too important and iconic a Scottish institution to be messed around in such a way. It deserves better management. It deserves a public inquiry. How about it, Nicol Stephen, minister of transport? Are you happy with the way your appointees are handling this important Scottish organisation?See the full content of this document
