DAVID Cameron says the scale of Britain's debt problem is worse than he thought and its consequences are potentially more critical than he feared.

In a speech on the economy today, the Prime Minister is expected to say "painful times" were inevitable but it is essential to tackle "the most urgent issue facing Britain - our massive deficit and growing debt".
