AS GLOSSILY appealing as the recent televisual vogue for adapting the classics as 21st-century star vehicles usually involving Billie Piper remains, witnessing the full rollicking expanse of such defining masterpieces in the flesh is an unbeatable experience. So it is with directors Gregory Doran, Rebecca Gatward and Jonathan Munby's 23-strong take on Chaucer, which rolled into Scotland this week courtesy of the Royal Shakespeare Company's portable theatre.

Mike Poulton's new adaptation is a mighty perambulation. A crossclass, cross-generational state-ofthe-nation mediaeval metaphysical romp cum glorified works outing, its dervish-like parade of devils, angels, saucy serial widows and flatulent workmen service all the great themes of love, death, war and infidelity.
