AS representatives of the community of Westray, one of the northernmost of the Orkney Isles, we want to highlight the dramatic effects the proposed Common Agricultural Policy reforms may have on communities, like this one, which rely on suckler cow farming as a major part of our economy.
Farming is the foundation of Westray's economy. It contributes over (pounds) 2m annually to this island and directly employs nearly 20% of our working population. Because it has such wide-reaching impact upon the island's whole economy, Westray Development Trust has undertaken a comprehensive study to identify the potential knock- on effects of decoupling subsidies from stock numbers.
