GIVEN that a Liberal, Harry Wilcox, was the leading figure in the 1951 case which led to the abolition of Second World War identity cards, it is pleasing to note that the Liberal Democrats are currently leading the opposition to the reintroduction of ID cards as a threat to civil liberties and a colossal waste of money.

That apart, the latest design for the new ID cards has to be criticised in that it does not celebrate the diversity of the home nations. It follows the Anglicisation of UK passports in including the English version of the Royal Arms . When in Scotland, the Queen uses the Scottish version in her flags and car shield. It is also headed with the words "National Identity Card" when the United Kingdom is not a nation but a multi-national state.
