The Last Samurai (Soundtrack) Hans Zimmer (Elektra)

HHHHH Hans Zimmer has made his considerable reputation creating bombastic, sweeping, fundamentally hollow orchestral scores for similarly bombastic films such as Gladiator and The Lion King, and here his music for Tom Cruise's new vanity picture is no different. Soaring strings, crescendo upon thundering crescendo, enervating self-conscious "grandeur" - but all with enough melody to listen in your car while commuting, rather than sweeping through ancient forests wielding a samurai sword. Unlike Cruise, the record is neither short nor entirely unappealing: Zimmer makes good use of thundering Kaito drums and ethnic woodwinds, and the main theme touches on beauty.
