NEIL LENNON last night insisted that the only reason Celtic lost out to Bristol City in the race to sign the England goalkeeper, David James, was the 39-year-old's decision to remain close to his roots in the south of England.

James did not attend a meeting arranged with Celtic officials in Glasgow on Monday, but Lennon said: "He couldn't make it for genuine personal reasons - we respect that. We got confirmation that he'd signed for Bristol City, and the reason is that it is close to home. We respect his decision, but we were right to pitch for him."
