SELDOM has a leap of faith been so richly rewarded. The Watford board's decision to appoint relative unknown Adrian Boothroyd as manager in March of last year attracted universal derision. Similarly, Malky Mackay's decision to swop Premiership-bound West Ham for Vicarage Road last summer hardly looked like a statement of intent.

For both men, close friends, vindication arrived on Sunday at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Against all the odds it was Watford, relegation candidates at the start of the season, who claimed a spot in the Premiership.
