I have no wish to become embroiled in the argument for or against the reported decision to close yet another department of chemistry - this time north of the border in the University of Dundee. However, I fear that the plea by your correspondents Carlo J Morelli and Mona Clark from the Dundee Association of University Teachers for the Scottish Executive to step in is naive and wrongheaded (Letters, December 6).
As someone who worked all his life in higher education in Scotland and, latterly, for a large part of my career interacting with government, it has always seemed to me that one of the great strengths of our university system, throughout the UK, is the vesting of academic decision-making in individual Senates and Courts.See the full content of this document
