THE organisation that co-ordinates marine research in the North Atlantic claims there is a cod crisis off Scottish shores that justifies a fishing ban.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (Ices) claims that its figures show stocks in the North Sea, Irish Sea and off the west of Scotland are so depleted that no cod fishing should be carried out in 2005.
