What became of the knowledge economy? Not so long ago it was deemed the latest and greatest of all the brave new post-industrial worlds. Some people, politicians chief among them, could hardly wait.

In this vision, a fresh generation, sustained by the internet and inspired by the spirit of innovation, would transform Britain. Our accumulating educational capital would become negotiable intellectual currency. In a host of new fields, we would have the edge over allcomers.
