If she stays the course, Amanda MacLean will have mastered the art of calligraphy by next summer and spent (pounds) 236.20 for the privilege. Value for money? "Probably not. I hadn't even tried to add up the cost. I try not to think about that," admits Amanda, a shop assistant.

She was attracted by the bargain launch offer for the latest part- work from French publisher Hachette. "For 99p, you got pen, nib and ink, as well as the first magazine. I must say I liked the look of it and I'd tried calligraphy when I was at school."
