AS THE colloquial usage would suggest, it is not easy playing second fiddle. This programme, however, was a bit of a showcase of Eva Karova, who has that gig with the acclaimed young Czechs. Leader Veronika Jaruskova is a more flamboyant player, but Karova's mellower tones and more relaxed style underpinned much of this programme, starting with the central waltz of Britten's Three Divertimenti.
It is her minimalist figure that launches the group's signature piece, From the Monkey Mountains, the Second String Quartet by Pavel Haas. It is a remarkable work that the quartet has reintroduced to the repertoire, and is scarcely less worthy of its place than Janacek's familiar pair. Like Janacek, it is full of idiosyncratic touches, many of them with a prominent role for the second violin, although it is the viola that hogs the meolody in the slow movement.See the full content of this document
