Andrew McKie is correct in warning us of his suspicions that the SNP was and for many of its members still is "a fairly militantly republican party" ("Queen's role wouldn't exist in an independent Scotland", The Herald, May 30). One only has to recall that when the First Minister was asked recently to take the oath of office swearing allegiance to the Crown he felt compelled to start by saying "the Scottish National Party's primary loyalty is to the people of Scotland, in line with the Scottish constitutional tradition of the sovereignty of the people". It seems to me that if the question "What is a republican party?" comes up in a school examination then Alex Salmond has given a good answer.
