THIS short, sharp and reasonably shocking thriller is among the first batch of six novels from MacMillan's roster of first-time writers. Originally branded "the Ryanair of publishing", the publishing initiative was slammed by some as a commercial gimmick. Well, there's nothing remotely gimmicky about this tense and present tense and very modern tale which explores identity, desire and obsession in our post-9/11 world.

Rob Saunders is a marketing man heading for his first day in a new job. On the way to work, he witnesses something awful. He sees a young student throw herself under a tube train. Impulsively, he picks up a file she dropped before she jumped.
