MULTICULTURAL is not only an accurate description of modern Britain. It is also a historical fact in a kingdom woven from four different nations and ruled by a monarch with German roots. Integration is a simple fact in the lives of most Scots and few think about where their Scottishness ends and their Britishness begins. Perhaps this is why Britain has embraced multiculturalism with more zeal than any European country. It is not a homogeneous multiculturalism - in fact, many parts of Britain are almost wholly white - but our big cities have absorbed successive waves of immigration, from Ireland, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. London, in particular, with its seven million inhabitants speaking 300 different languages, has become the archetype of a multicultural world city. Absorbing these new peoples has sometimes produced tensions and difficulties. However, siren voices on the right who predicted "rivers of blood"were wrong. Britain has not descended into anarchy. In fact, multiculturalism has generated cultural vibrancy and economic strength. London's Olympic bid team successfully tapped into this legacy in selling the English capital to the IOC judges in Singapore.
