Summary

These two metro-polises have been bitter rivals for the top-spot in Europe's urban hierarchy since the seventeenth century, but it is worth noting the different bases for the success of the two cities.
Urban historians classify certain metropolises as "central place cities", and others as "network cities". The former derive their success from mobilising and exploiting the resources (human and material) of their hinterland, while the latter depend crucially upon their occupying a nodal position on the international trade routes, as a place of exchange.
