Summary
THE explosion of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in December 1988 remains the worst terrorist outrage ever perpetrated in Britain. The release yesterday of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi on grounds of compassion has caused understandable dismay among many of the relatives of the 270 people who died that night. Nevertheless, it was the right decision.
Megrahi remains the only person ever convicted of the bombing, a conviction he will carry to the grave, following his decision to drop his second appeal. The fact that he continues to maintain his innocence and that many have doubts about the safety of his conviction are irrelevant to yesterday's decision, which was based purely on compassion for a man who is terminally ill.See the full content of this document
