A BBC helpline set up to console and advise members of the public over sensitive issues such as rape, cancer and drug abuse is suffering through being run by a private firm, employees claimed yesterday.

Concerns have been raised over the ability of staff at the BBC's Action Line in Glasgow to carry out their job since the operation was outsourced to Capita Business Services, a company which has become involved in controversy over other public service contracts.
