ESCALATING fuel costs continue to bite into farmers' budgets, with fertiliser prices now a major issue as winter crop planning nears.

Twelve months ago, a farmer could buy a tonne of nitrogen for around GBP120. It is now GBP140 a tonne, and availability threatens to become a problem.
