Janey Buchan makes some relevant points in her letter (April 20). In particular I agree that we should be alert to "the forces pitching up . . . against the interests of the people of Glasgow". And this applies to many other parts of Scotland.

Councillors on Glasgow's development applications sub-committee are usually presented with recommendations to grant applications. The assumption is in favour of the developer unless there are clear strong breaches of policy. Even on Tuesday an application in Murano Street, Firhill, was approved despite insufficient parking and insufficient green space - ie, two breaches of council policies. Clearly, there are to be too many flats on the site. Development and regeneration services, the department responsible, wants to cram as much housing as possible into every spare site. There appears to be a conflict of interest between the department's desire for development and its role as adjudicator on planning matters.
