Summary
I WOULD have to echo Mark Boyle's call for government intervention in the running of our railways (December 13), albeit for slightly different reasons.
Our Scottish Executive has empowered the SPT to handle the biggest railway infrastructure project in the west of Scotland, the Glasgow Airport rail link. It is already running a year late and reporting a 21per cent price rise during that period of inactivity. The proposed legislation for the new railway gives the SPT, yes the SPT, unfettered power to build and dismantle a new major fuel- storage installation at Glasgow Airport. I turn again to your front page and the headline of the "Apocalyptic blaze" in Hemel Hempstead and wonder why or who in the executive would give such unquestioned authority to the people who have designed the new Larkhall link without thought to disabled access (Victor Slater's letter, December 13. ) This is what it comes down to - good design and a bit of forethought. BAA in its recent 25-year masterplan mention no need for a new fuel depot. But because the SPT cannot design around the existing one it proposes to tear it down, but not before building a brandnew one, slap-bang beside the Paisley Moss Nature Reserve.See the full content of this document
