THE average carpet could be harbouring millions of harmful bacteria which, if left unwashed, could lead to infections and even food poisoning, according to research funded by Vax, a manufacturer of products for household cleaning.

Yet that conclusion has been dismissed by Professor Graham Rook, one of the UK's leading authorities on hygiene and the development of the human immune system.
