Rebecca McQuillan's article asks whether the right to buy should now be abolished. Support for that proposition is provided by many of those involved in the current provision of social rented housing. Similarly, many members of opposition parties would support its abolition.

However, it appears unlikely that such abolition will occur. In its consultation paper Better Homes for Scotland's Communities, published before the passing of the 2001 Housing Act, the Scottish Executive made it clear that abolition is a non-starter.
