THE Confederation of British Industry has promoted deputy general secretary John Cridland to its top post to replace incumbent Richard Lambert.

Mr Cridland, who has fronted the CBI's recent lobbying for legal changes to make trade union industrial action more difficult, will take over as director-general at the end of January with an annual salary of pound(s)310,000.
