Summary
MP CHARLES Kennedy's comments that all female shoplifters should be spared prison are very naive. What sanction will there be against the small number of hardcore female shoplifters who make a very lucrative living from the crime. They will be laughing all the way to the bank.
We should already have a decreasing prison population, with hardened criminals serving only half of their sentences, automatic bail being given in almost all cases under Tony Blair's human rights legislation and the increasing numbers of community service orders.
