CRISIS in the recording industry? What crisis is that, then? From at least one perspective, music lovers have never had it so good. It's a buyer's market out there, and whether you're interested in possessing a single copy of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony because it contains melodies you have come to know and hum, or something infinitely more arcane, such as the seriously neglected, seven- symphony cycle of Sir Arnold Bax, you can buy them readily, in reputable recordings from quality orchestras, at an affordable price - less than a fiver a disc in very many cases.

Less than a fiver? You don't believe me? Then head into the nearest large record store - try Virgin - make for the classical section, and have a glance at the Naxos shelves. There, you will come across an Aladdin's cave of classical compact discs from right across the spectrum, with all the single CDs just shaving that magical figure of five pounds.
