Summary

NEIL Robertson's letter of July 21 made a good point regarding a tribute to Hamish Henderson. A piazza a la those in Trasimeno with lots of wee bars, for example. Mr Robertson was not entirely accurate about the "D-Day Dodgers". The words were compiled by the "squaddies" and sung to the tune of Lili Marlene. What Hamish did, with I think the help of Norman Buchan, was "tidy up" the verses of some of the obscenities which they directed at Lady Astor. I know there are still some of the original verses available.

Mr Robertson's dates are also a wee bit inaccurate. The landings at Salerno were on September 9, 1943. The battles at Cassino were severest until the breakout in May 1944 and by mid-June, 1944, Lago Trasimeno was behind Allied lines. If Mr Robertson initiates a fund for his idea of a tribute to Hamish Henderson I am sure many of us would donate.
