With an obviously heavy heart, Iain Mann describes the alternative vote as "the lesser of two evils" and "only a marginal improvement" on first-past-the-post (Letters, April21). But is it? If adopted it will discredit all PR options in the minds of those who have never given the subject a moment's thought, up to now, and any future attempt to change to a really proportional system is likely to meet with even greater antagonism than the No campaign is trying to whip up.
However, there is one potential benefit of the AV referendum - it is raising awareness of the fair votes debate. Can that be leveraged so that in the event of a marginal majority of No votes, it generates a growing non-party momentum for a really fair system?See the full content of this document
