THE Conservative Party has hailed the first-ever "open primary" selection of parliamentary candidate as a huge success despite speculation that the Liberal Democrats skewed the postal vote of an entire constituency to pick the weakest candidate in the field.

The Tories said they were delighted with the winning candidate, Dr Sarah Wollaston, and with the 24per cent turnout in Totnes, Devon, where the sitting Tory MP, Anthony Steen, is standing down following controversy about his expenses. Mr Steen retained the seat in 2005 with a majority of 1947 over the LibDems.
