THE Liberal Democrats yesterday claimed their general election campaign was off to a flying start, with Charles Kennedy jetting across the UK and welcoming a Labour defector to the fold.

He opened his campaign in Manchester to capitalise on the party's capture of a Labour candidate in the Ribble Valley seat, where Stephen Wilkinson said he was defecting because of his disillusion with the "increasingly authoritarian" trend of Labour.
