SHELVES in supermarkets and shops across Scotland were lying empty as the severe weather delayed deliveries and consumers began bulk-buying fresh produce.

Retailers said that regular deliveries were being made, but they acknowledged that the hazardous road conditions meant it was taking longer for supplies to reach shops from the main depots.
