GORDON Brown signalled his clear support for a new independent nuclear deterrent last night as he sought to assure a City of London audience and Middle Britain that a Brownled government would not lurch to the left.

The Chancellor's statement will appal anti-Trident campaigners and supporters on his own side who hoped he would shift government policy but, prepared to risk their endorsement, he firmly aligned himself to the Prime Minister's defence strategy.
