DR G D Morrice frankly confesses to difficulty in following the twists and turns of the Shirley McKie case without a resume (Letters, April 16). It would be difficult to refute Gordon C Ford's (April 13) rose-tinted view of the police without obscure allusions - eg, to the fact that Shirley McKie was charged with perjury, but David Asbury's stepfather, equally guilty in police eyes, was not.

Marion Ross [pictured] was found stabbed to death in January 1997. Of 428 fingerprints in Miss Ross's abode, one smudged thumbprint, found on a door frame inside, was alleged to match that of DC Shirley Cardwell (now McKie), who had supplied her prints for elimination purposes, but awkwardly insisted she had not set foot inside the house.
