Ian Bell has written a characteristically excellent column on events in Ireland, but it is necessary to factor in the role of the IMF in all of this in order to see the complete picture ("Ireland is the first domino to fall in Europe's great game", The Herald, November 24).
A rift is emerging between the EU and the IMF on the rescue deal owing to Ireland's low corporation taxes. The IMF wants the low rate retained, the EU would like it raised because it sees it as unfair on the other countries in the eurozone. The Irish Government has made clear that corporation tax will not be raised, so the IMF has had its way.See the full content of this document
