ONE of the aspects of our increasing distance from the war years and the subsequent period of National Service, spent by many in action somewhere in the world, is that fewer of our population have experienced the selfdiscipline required both in action and in barracks, or have any understanding of what it means to face an armed enemy;

even in war it is not always necessary to shoot on sight; training and experience will inform the decision.
