It might well be the case that, because it is not a criminal offence to take it, some people are under the delusion that mephedrone is not harmful. ("SNP takes on Westminster over party drug", the Herald, March 20.) However, we should not pass legislation in reaction to such foolishness.

If an action is illegal, we can infer merely that we commit a crime if we perform it and therefore could be liable to lawful punishment.
