Eminent historian Professor Donald Watt remained loyal to St Andrews University for more than 35 years in a number of roles and during his illustrious career played an increasing role in the development of Scottish historical scholarship, particularly through the annual gathering of medievalists.

Professor Watt, who was appointed to a personal chair in the Department of Medieval History at St Andrews in 1977, was regarded as "a scholar's scholar" and enjoyed a reputation as a teacher of exceptional brilliance.
