IT is the first PGA Tour victory by a Scot on American soil since Sandy Lyle more than 21 years ago but, as far as the Ryder Cup is concerned, Martin Laird will have to join the European Tour and then do it all over again if he is to make advances on one of the nine automatic qualifying places for next year's match in Wales.

The 40 world ranking points Laird earned with his play-off victory against Americans Chad Campbell and George McNeill in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital For Children Open in Nevada would have taken him close to one of these spots, but these are lost forever. Even if he does sign up for Europe they would not count retrospectively.
