Ciaran McFeely is in bed strumming on his guitar when his phone rings. Once you've found out a bit about him, you have to wonder whether the Irishman's London flat has an arty unkemptness about it. Considering the comparisons to Arlo Guthrie, Beck, Bob Dylan and Marc Bolan, you certainly imagine his hair to be a right state. No, he's not the New Beck, he says, "but all those comparisons make some sense".

McFeely might be a socially conscious indie maverick who works under the name Simple Kid, but he can also be Skiffle Kid. On Skiffle Kid days, he works banjos, violins and a general Deliverance- style nonsense in to his act. If the mood takes him, he'll become Sample Kid, and muck about with a laptop. He becomes Complicated Kid every now and then, playing a different musical instrument for each song in a solo set. When he can't be bothered to do any of these things, he is Karaoke Kid, and lets the gig-goers do the work.
