SHARES in newly-merged ITV plc made a strong debut yesterday, gaining almost 5% and taking the broadcasting giant's market value to around (pounds) 5.9bn.

By the close of dealing ITV, created by the combination of Granada and Carlton Communications, had risen to 148p. That compares with Granada's closing price of 140.5p last Friday.
