HAVING just read about James Craig Heggie - the pharmacist based in Tobermory [pictured], Mull - I feel it necessary to voice my opinion on the impending rural housing crisis across Scotland. Being a chartered town planner working for a development consultancy, I deal almost every day with the requirement to provide an "affordable" element of housing as part of all new private housing developments. While the policy vehicle for seeking affordable housing is still relatively recent, it is starting to have the desired affect (within London and other urban areas at least) of providing quality homes for those in need.

Similarly, the announcement on Monday by Malcolm Chisholm, unveiling the Scottish Executive's plans to assist those who cannot afford a home to split the price with a local housing association, should be welcomed, generally, as one method in which to alter the nation's impending shortage of affordable housing.
