BRITISH Airways beat second-quarter profit forecasts yesterday following deep cost-cutting, but the company warned that high fuel costs and swingeing fare competition will continue to weigh on its performance.

Europe's second-biggest airline posted a pre-tax surplus of (pounds) 220m for the July to September period - up from (pounds) 105m in 2003, when demand was hit by both the Iraq War and the Sars virus outbreak in Asia. The upturn helped push first-half profits up to (pounds) 335m from (pounds) 60m last time.
