Glasgow could yet lose out to Edinburgh in a two-way battle to lure iconic retailer Selfridges to Scotland, it has emerged. The development company Edinburgh City Centre Management, which is supported by the council and local businesses, is to make a renewed attempt to attract the department store to the capital.

ECCM has failed with previous bids, but is now planning another approach which may use as bait the site currently occupied by the Scottish Provident offices on the south side of St Andrews Square. That building has been earmarked for closure by Abbey National.
